BIRDING IN HIGHLANDS COUNTY

BirdingHighlands County offers an abundance of birds for both beginners and advanced birders. The county features birds that are permanent residents or migrate here for the winter. Others just migrate through on their annual journey. Visit Highlands Hammock State Park, Avon Park Air Force Wildlife Range, Lake June in Winter Scrub State Park, Archbold Biological Station - Indian Prairie Safari Ranch, Hickory Hammock, Istokpoga Park, The Preserve, Arbuckle Creek or any of the backroads in Highlands County. View Little Blue or Green Backed Herons, Eagles, Osprey, Short-tailed hawks, Crested Caracaras, Limpkins, Swallow-tailed Kite, Purple Gallinule, Great Blue or Tricolored Herons and many others, right in your own backyard. Lake Bonnet Village is within a wildlife sanctuary and is itself, a marvelous place to do a little birding.
